The Southampton Counseling Department’s mission is to promote each student’s academic, social and emotional development, while assisting the student with career development and post-secondary planning. Our focus is to create a collaborative environment with students, parents and educators by helping students develop the independence and skills necessary to successfully navigate life’s transitions and make healthy decisions.
The philosophy of the Southampton Counseling department emerges from our belief that every student possesses a unique set of strengths and skills. Our work with each student reflects this philosophy and guides us in our role as student advocates.

PSAT / SAT & Pre-ACT / ACT Information
There are two standardized exams colleges use to get a “snapshot” of college readiness, the SAT and the ACT. Students can choose to take one or the other or both and may include their highest score with their college applications. Counselors will provide information to all students to help them interpret their results.
Taking these exams should not be stressful as many colleges are test optional and do not consider these scores when making admission decisions. Southampton High School administers the Pre-ACT to all students in 10th grade and the PSAT to all 11th grade students as practice exams. Additionally, SHS administers the SAT School Day Exam to 12th grade students in the Fall (October) and to 11th grade students in the Spring (March), no student registration is needed for these 2 exams. If students wish to take an additional SAT exam, they will need to register for a weekend exam using the college board link below.
All SHS students in grades 9-12, have access to an online test prep resource called Method Learning through their Castle Learning Account on their chromebook.

Southampton High School’s Work Based Learning Program Description
“Work-Based Learning” is a course/program that enables students to engage in real-world settings by collaborating with local businesses to gain hands-on skills, industry insights, and mentorship. Students can also earn high school credits (up to 2) through a summer or after-school job or internship!
Through an independent study dynamic, a Work Based Learning Coordinator will guide students through reflective assignments, and career-focused projects, to help students enhance their employability skills while aligning with the NYSED Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) standards.
*This course meets part of the requirements for a CDOS credential. Credit value is related to the number of hours served at work site placement per year and successful completion of this course.
