Welcome Dr. Morrell

The Southampton School District would like to officially welcome Dr. Morrell, our new superintendent.

A seasoned administrator with more than 30 years of educational experience, Dr. Morrell is coming to Southampton from the Buffalo Public Schools system. Throughout her career, Dr. Morrell has been honored for her forward-thinking educational approach, including as recipient of the National School Boards Association 2023 Magna Award and Buffalo’s Excellence in Education 2023 “Trailblazer of the Year” Award, as well as being recognized by Time Magazine as a National Innovative Teacher in 2022. In 2021, she was a recipient of a Pulitzer Center Grant and gained international recognition for the Emancipation Curriculum. Dr. Morrell also served as a thought leader of the National Center on Systemic Improvement of Special Education, a role in which she served from 2020-2022.

She is a New York State-certified Outside Educational Expert as part of the Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness Initiative and has also shared her extensive knowledge as a member of the New York State Board of Regents Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures and she served as an advisor to the New York State Education Department’s Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework.

Dr. Morrell began her career in education as an English and Spanish teacher at Kensington-Prep High School. She taught Spanish at the Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School before moving into administration. She has served in various administrative capacities, including as an elementary and secondary principal and assistant superintendent of curriculum, assessment and instruction. She has served as Buffalo Public Schools’ Chief of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Initiatives since 2021.
