Position: Department Chairperson(s)

  • Science (Grades 7-12) - 4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period 
  • Social Studies (Grades 7-12) - 4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period
  • Math(Grades 7-12) - 4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period
  • English(Grades 7-12) - 4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period 
  • Fine Arts (Grades 7-12)- 4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period 
  • World Language (Grade 7-12)  4 Periods Teaching/Release from 1 teaching period and 1 duty period

Reports to: Building Principals and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

Department chairpersons serve as lead teachers in the implementation of curriculum and instructional practices that result in exceptional student achievement and teaching.  Additionally, the DC disseminates and interprets data within their content area and provides analysis of data in order to impact instruction.  With the support of building principals and district administration, department chairs are responsible for targeted professional development.  Department chairs assist in the research and implementation of best practices in curriculum and instruction and work collaboratively with his or her counterparts across the district.  This position is an annual appointment. To accommodate the responsibilities below, the department chair will not teach a full load of classes nor have a duty.

Responsible for:

  • Reviewing and providing department members with effective research-based pedagogical practices and action research to increase student achievement
  • Facilitating and leading on-site curriculum writing sessions as needed
  • Working with administration to update, organize, and edit curriculum in Google Docs after the curriculum writing sessions have taken place
  • Ensuring that department curriculum is appropriately paced and aligned with state standards 
  • Providing an agenda and collecting attendance for regularly scheduled meetings
  • Coordinating and facilitating department meetings and PLC meetings 
  • Attending building leadership meetings as scheduled by building principals
  • Updating and disseminating information to the department team from the building administration
  • Consulting with building principals regarding budgeting, acquisition of resources, and scheduling
  • Ensuring that the department updates curriculum documents as needed  
  • Supporting teachers and staff in understanding and implementing the curriculum documents 
  • Planning, coordinating, and facilitating ongoing professional development opportunities in conjunction with the administration 
  • Assisting in facilitating the integration and use of instructional technology as it relates to the department 
  • Participating in staffing and course-offering conversations with administration and counseling office
  • Assisting administration with NYS state assessments, including scoring of assessments and grade reporting 
  • Collaborating with administration to support a culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning by using the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework
  • Adhering to the policies and procedures of the Southampton School District
  • Coordinate and facilitate regional musical events hosted by the District **** Fine Arts only
  • Other related duties as required

Technology/Proficient in:

  • Google Suite and Google Classroom
  • BOCES BARS

General Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 

  • Tenured Content Certified Teacher
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues to effectively achieve assigned duties
  • Proficient in the use of technology for student instruction
  • Knowledge of district curriculum and NYS learning standards
